NVQ's were introduced by the Government to assess occupational competence in the workplace. The NVQ, or National Vocational Qualification to give it its full title, is completed while you are at work, usually via a diary or log and supported by evidence. Evidence is often in the form of photos, risk assessments, job sheets, test result sheets and other relevant documents. The portfolio as it is normally known is then assessed by a qualified assessor from a college or training provider. Site visits will also take place during your training to cover the relevant units.
The current NVQ can currently be studied at Level 2 and at Level 3. It is offered by both the City and Guilds and EAL and can usually be sourced from a local college or training provider.
The current NVQ requires you to cover the following mandatory units:
And the following optional units for oil installations:
And the following optional units for gas:
The NVQ can be completed in 2 stages, first completion of the NVQ Level 2 for Basic Plumbing and then the NVQ Level 3 Domestic Plumbing qualification.
The C&G 6089 closes to new registrations in December 2011.
