domestic electrical installer

This qualification is offered as a VRQ (Vocationally Related Qualification) by EAL and is aimed at those who are in some way allied to the trade such as:

  • Plumbers
  • Gas fitters
  • Kitchen fitters
  • Fire and security engineers

It covers 17 units, one externally assessed, the rest internal exercises with a combination of multiple choice tests and the completion of practical tasks giving the individual the full qualification.

It enables these individuals to join a competent person scheme so they can carry out basic domestic electrical work as they would as part of their daily role. The role of a plumber in a domestic situation would require such a qualification to add electrically powered systems.

Although there has been consternation about this course, if delivered correctly it has proved to be a well devised course with a lot of useful information and practical experience to be gained. The issue within the electrical world is people getting the qualification and calling themselves electricians afterward.

There is another alternative to this qualification offered by the NICEIC known as the DISQ, the Domestic Installer Scheme Qualification and the City and Guilds have announced three qualifications that may also be of some use, the 2393 - 10 Part P Electrical Safety, 2393 - 20 Qualified Supervisors to Part P and the 2393– 30 Building Regs Electrical safety Commercial and industrial installers.
